Budapest has always been a city known for its springtime food and drink festivals, and 2017 is no different. Here is a short list of the best-known food and drink festivals coming your way in May.
Cinco de Mayo, May 6-7
Iguana Mexican restaurant, Zoltán u., 5th District
An annual event since the restaurant’s inception, this is still Budapest’s only – and biggest – and BEST – street party. “Seenko day my-oh,” Spanish for “Fifth of May,” is a celebration held on May 5 – obviously. The date commemorates the Mexican Army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza. Don’t confuse Cinco de Mayo with Mexico’s Independence Day. Iguana Restaurant’s Grande Fiesta includes mariachi bands, special Mexican foods and even Mexican beer, along with a gigantic helping of Mexican fun.

Food Truck Show, May 5-7
Albertirsai út 2-4, (Kincsem Park), 10th District
The primary purpose of this alfresco gastronomy festival is to gather together in one place all of the best and highest-quality food and drinks offered by mobile food preparers in Budapest. There are dishes made from a wide range of ingredients; extras include homemade syrups, specialty beers, pálinka and wines. Roving gourmands can try a variety of handheld treats, including succulent burgers, innovatively served sausages, zesty barbecue treats and many other mouthwatering meals and high-spirited drinks. In addition to the Best of the Best in rolling culinary expertise, there will also be horse races, greyhound races, children’s programs, bands, street performers and street artists.

Budai Gourmet, May 18-21
Millenáris Park, noon to midnight
Budai Gourmet is a gastro festival sponsored by the people behind Sziget Festival and the award-winning Costes Restaurant. The festival aims to bring together the best wine makers, pálinka distillers, restaurants and confectioners along with a market place for producers to showcase their homemade cheese, ham, sausage, jam, honey, chocolate and other delicacies. Budai Gourmet adds a twist to the standard gastro-themed festivals by inviting more than 25 of Hungary’s top restaurants for a culinary extravaganza, including Bock, Costes, Csalogány 26, Déryné, Nobu, Rosenstein and Tigris. Live musical performances on two stages are also on offer.

8th Annual Belgian Beer Festival, May 19-21
at Bálna Budapest on the Danube, 9th District
Beer lovers can taste over 200 different types of Belgian beer from 43 breweries. The festival’s venue is Bálna, Budapest’s newest and most popular state-of-the-art cultural center on the Danube’s rive gauche. The entrance fee is HUF 2,800 or HUF 4,000. The fee is valid for both days of the event and includes a beer mug and three or five glasses of Belgian brew. Festival hours: Friday from 5 pm to 11 pm, Saturday from noon to 11 pm and Sunday from: noon to 8 pm.

Rosalia Wine Festival, May 12-14
Budapest City Park (Városliget – City Park)
Brought to you by the organizers of the prestigious Budapest International Wine Festival, Rosalia is Hungary’s only festival dedicated to rosé wines, sparkling wines and champagnes. The three-day event features a Rosé Garden, with plenty of tasting, jazz concerts, kids programs and traditional Hungarian food paired with just the right wine. A rosé wine challenge is also part of the event. Entry is free. Opening hours: Friday from 2 pm to midnight, Saturday from noon to midnight, Sunday from 10 am to 9 pm.
