Let’s say goodbye to the chilly old winter in a stylish way. The purpose of Farsang (carnival) season in Hungary is to scare the evil spirits away and then make way for the mild and fertile spring. As always seems to be the way somehow, the best way to celebrate Frasang is, of course, by partying.
Hungary offers a wide range of ‘winter-expunging’ masquerade opportunities including the Busójárás we already wrote about this week, flamboyant parties or more intimate gatherings. In Hungary carnival season starts on Epiphany, January 6th and ends on Ash Wednesday, which falls on February 10th this year. Today we’re offering three fancy-dress events to make your Farsang go with a bang:
Carnival Season in Hungary: For Shakespeare Fans
A Renaissance-themed opera ball with the king of the opera, Placido Domingo will certainly be a big thing for the high-end arts and business folks and in quite spectacular surroundings. Needless to say, you shouldn’t forget your tuxedo or ball gown for this one.

Carnival Season in Hungary: Masquerade in the Party Quarter
Vinyl, old-school hip-hop and funk rhythms, that’s what Mika Tivadar offers as a cool alternative to the more fancy events this Farsang. This is an ideal place for the boom bass fans and for those who love an 80’s and 90’s throwback.

Carnival Season in Hungary: A Jaw-Dropping Night With Nemadomfel (Never Give Up) band
A seriously amazing party to be held on the A38 boat. Nemadomfel band is formed by mentally and visually impaired musicians. This fantastic group is famous for amazingly fun and technically proficient concerts.
